“Wherever the eye lingers
it finds hunger.
The things of the world
want us for dinner.
Inside each pebble or leaf
or puddle is a hook.
The appetites of the world
compete to catch a look.
What does this mean and
how does this work?
Why aren’t rocks complete?
Why isn’t green adequate
to green? We aren’t gods
whose gaze could save,
but that’s how the things
of the world behave.”

A poem by Kay Ryan.

I found this poem the other night in a book that holds a collection of work by Ryan. It caught my eye for the fact that I have never thought about the world like this before. And each and every time I read it, I like it that much more. So take the time to look around at the things of the world today….and notice what is catching you.
