One of my favorite poets that I discovered at a young age was Langston Hughes. His simple, yet profound words have always reached out to me, sometimes even for reasons unknown. In the last English class that I went to with el Senor, our Professor put this before us and I wanted to do the same for you. It’s titled “Harlem,” by the remarkable Langston Hughes.

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore-
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over-
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

Have you ever had a dream deferred? What happened to it?
